Arrived at the marina on Friday morning, hopeful of making the noon opening of the Portumna swing bridge and looking forward to a trip to Garrykennedy. Gorgeous sunshine beaming down from a clear blue sky. This looks like the ultimate calm-water scene...NOT so! The marina was totally iced......

• Arrived at the marina on Friday morning, hopeful of making the noon opening of the Portumna swing bridge and looking forward to a trip to Garrykennedy. Gorgeous sunshine beaming down from a clear blue sky. This looks like the ultimate calm-water scene...NOT so! The marina was totally iced......
• Made a quick assessment that it was not advisable to try and breakout from the ice. Even with engines running it was noticeable that there was little impact on the surrounding ice. And where the ice did melt .... it quickly re-froze!

BTW, if you view this photo in one of the larger modes (x3 or Original size) you can observe the double layer of ice which bestrides the marina. What I think happened is that the initial layer of ice was subsequently covered with an inflow of extra water from the river during the high winds of the preceding day(s) and that this layer of water froze on top of the existing layer of ice. Note also the various stones, presumably thrown onto the ice by boat-owners or visitors to the marina which were attempts to see whether the ice could be pierced!!!
• Lokking back down the marina from the river end. And, yes...the rising smoke in the distance is coming from "Arthur's" running engines...
• A thin, second layer of ice can be seen here, running across the marina at the halfway point in the photo, when the photo is viewed in one of the larger modes, i.e. x3 or original
• The 'other' side of the marina....
• Most intriguing of all was the way that the ice formed at the mouth of the entrance to the marina...rock solid, even at the point, so close to the water moving in the channel as it heads down towards Portumna swing bridge and onto Lough Derg.....
• So, unless an ice breaker enter s the amrina it looks like "Arthur" will be staying put for a while longer.
