  • Circa 11.55, New Year's Day (Thursday), 2009 ... "Arthur" aproaches Portumna Swing Bridge for the purpose of gaining access to Lough Derg. Destination....Garrykennedy.
  • Road traffice comes to a halt .... and nothing hapens for approx 30 mins. Cars do not move, bridge does not swing open... "I smell trouble ahead..."
  • Car drivers frrom both sides of bridge converse as to what they can do...
  • Tempers fray.....road barriers stay down .... and still bridge does not swing open...
  • Circa 12.34 .... Civilians raise road barriers and road traffic flows across the bridge once again... "Arthur" adjourns to floating jetty. Technical support is summoned to address problems re bridge. It is rumoured that New Year's Eve revellers had vandalised the road barriers as a consequence of which the bridge would not swing open!
  • Christy Houlihan, Keeper of Portumna Bridge, who summoned technical support and assureed "Arthur" that she would pass through when bridge was fixed. And, true to hs word, "Arthur" passed through at 15.20. Thanks Christy..you made our weekend for us as the following photos bear witness.
  • Circa 15.22. Portumna Bridge starts the closing cycle...and "Arthur" heads for Garrykennedy.
  • Friday, 2nd January 2009, circa 15.30 ....after overnighting at Garrykennedy it was a toss-up for the 'paper run' on Friday...The choice appeared to be Scariff or Killaloe. Mt. Shannon was disounted due to uncertainty of availaibility of newspapers! Killaloe won the toss.
  • Took these shots of "Arthur" from the Ballina-Killaloe bridge on way back to boat after brief shopping expedition on both sides of the bridge!
  • About to make return trip to Garrykennedy. Weather so far has been glorious...all day Thursday and so far on Friday.
  • M2 on the bridge...Due to the number of Marys who travel on "Arthur" ease of identification is achieved by numeric reference...Mary1, Mary2, Mary3, etc. Currently the range runs from M1 to M7!!!
  • Shot taken from quayside...
  • Backup shot...just in case...
  • 15.45....departing Killaloe bound for Garrykennedy.
  • Approaching the mouth of Killaoe estuary...
  • M2 at the helm...
  • Gorgeous landscape colouring...
  • I love the way the colour of the reeds changes throughout the year...
  • As light fades...Killaoe in the distance...
