  • Sunday, 25th June, 2011. It was approximately 12.30 when we left Hodson Bay... Miss Eva (see photo), Lady Faye, Heron's Wake and "Arthur." We had just spent the weekend in Hodson Bay with the Cruising Club. "Arthur" was killing time before heading to sea and I had wanted to travel up the Shannon past Lanesboro and onwards to Carrick-on-Shannon. I was on a mission...I wanted to complete my collection of photographs of locks and lock-keepers. And also, I had not ventured past Portrunny since the summer of 2006. And Mary had never cruised beyond Portrunny. "Arthur" was about to enter unfamiliar cruising grounds....and her capatain and crew were looking forward to it! We would have company as far as Lanesboro and then it was back to CIOC...Cruising In Own Company!
  • Despite a poor weather forecast for Sunday we headed up Lough Ree and we were very pleasantly surprised. Almost ideal conditions. Relatively low wind and what there was in the way of wind was blowing from the south! Heron's Wake and Miss Eva behind me....Lady Faye in front of me!
  • As we approached Portrunny we bid farewell to Heron's Wake who headed for her home berth.
  • Looking back down Lough Ree. If you view the photo in large size you can see Miss Eva in the distance.
  • Meanwhile, Charlie Murray in Lady Faye was leading the way as we headed towards Lanesboro.
  • Lanesboro in sight...
  • We approached the bridge passing the old public harbour on our port side.
  • We moored temporarily in the small public harbour between the bridge and Hanleys Marina. A nice sheltered spot, especially if it is blowing wild outside! But it is small!
  • A light lunch onboard "Arthur" was quickly arranged as we pooled our letf-tovers from the weekend. Archie (Miss Eva) heading for "Arthur"...

  • Miss Eva soon continued on her way hoping to make Tarmonbarry before last lock. Lady Faye moored up in Hanleys intending to continue her travels northward later in the week. "Arthur" overnighted in Hanleys. This photo shows Cruising Club member 'Whyte Lady' (Joe and Michelle) approaching Hanleys, their home berth.
  • Boys will be boys...directly opposite Hanleys Marina!
  • Count his upturned fingers and you will get the message!
  • And that's what you call 'wake'!
  • Hanleys Marina with Bord-na-Mona plant in the background. Photo taken circa 7pm as we set out on an exploratory trip into Lanesboro.
  • That little public harbour photographed from land!
  • Lanesborough....at the mouth of the entrance to the small public harbour! So, what is the correct spelling...Lanesboro or Lanesborough? Is 'boro' always an acceptable alternative for 'borough'?
  • Looking back towards the bridge.
  • Lanesborough Bridge
