  • The IWAICC had arranged a special 'June on Lough Ree' CIC scheduled from 3rd June until 26th June. Whereas some boats and crews would participate for the entire period it was expected that many would jump in and out according to their own circumstances. Arthur was in the latter camp but hoped to make it to Athlone for the first weekend. And so, on Sunday morning, 5th June, 2011, we left Portumna circa 11.15 am in the company of Cruidin who had just come through the swing bridge. We headed for Victoria Lock and gingerly made our way into the lock via the single open gate. The second gate was damaged and could not be opened!
  • Bryan O'Donnell (Cruidin) does the ropes in the lock.
  • So, passing out all those other boats on the passage from Portumna simply led to Arthur being on the front row in the lock! A fairly full lock...ten boats in all. And all having to exit in single file because again there was only a single gate in operation!
  • We duly passed through Banagher where we noticed the Lough Derrg IWAI Fleet who were scheduled to be in Banagher for the weekend.
  • A busy Banagher public harbour...Lough Derg Branch IWAI CIC came a visiting!

  • Just beyond Clonmacnoise we came upon Shee Finnaha (Derry Smyth) who was also heading towards Athlone...

  • We arrived in Athlone circa 17.30 and then joined the Cruising Club's BBQ in the green area at the public harbour. Joe Tierney (Scappare) was on hand to greet us.
  • Matt & Catherine Ryan (Pantou Pao) join in the fun.
  • Two beauties...and not a beast in sight! Danielle Miley (Misty) and Val Moroney (Explorer)
