Friday: We made it through the 3pm Portumna Bridge opening and headed for Dromineer. A light F4 with southerly winds. We arrived at our destination approximately 2hrs later after a lesiurely cruise. Had been under the impression that some shorepower blocks had been installed by WI....duh! Just goes to show what impressions can do to you!

  • Harbour relatively quiet. A barge and a few cruisers but a general appearance of being relatively empty! No doubt activity would develop on Saturday and Sunday.
  • Sunset at Dromineer...Had a lovely dinner and experimented with a few more of the wines purchased during Tesco's recent 25% discount promotion. Vermentino and Fiano, both Sicilian, are new favourites with us. The former purchased at €6.99 with 25% still to come off and the latter at the giveaway price of €5.99 (less 25% making it €4.50 per btl). They makde a pleasant change from our favoured Sauvignon Blanc.
  • Saturday morning: John *Breakaway' Kinsella had very kindly offerd to take us out on his boat for an experimental sailing trip for two novices who were totally inexperienced in real sailing! He had orignally suggested Sunday but inclement weather caused him to change it to Saturday. Weather forecast was a gentle F3/F4 with gusts of F6. After a light breakfast we headed round to the Lough Derg Yacht Club where Breakaway has her home berth.
  • The impressive club house of Lough Derg Yacht Club. We arrived circa 10.30.
  • Breakaway in her berth.
  • Breakway in landscape orientation.
  • A somewhat serious-looking John Kinsella.
  • Mary holding Breakaway onto the berth while John gets ready to slip the lines....
  • Exiting LDYC...
  • Yours truly takes the tiller.
  • John, in relaxed mode...
  • Another SV raisng their sails in Dromineer Bay.
  • Mary takes over tiller duties
  • Mary, getting the hang of things...and enjoyinbg it!
  • John casting a critcal eyes over his novice crew members! We head towards Scarriff Bay.
  • Weather, still mild and even the sun came out....for a while!
  • A happy skipper salutes his new crew who have risen to the occasion admirably... :-)
  • Circa 12.20....we are nearly 2 hrs on the water and John has been apologising for the relatively calm state and lack of excitement!
  • Mary and John .... waiting for some excitement!
