What a lovely smile....Just setting off to Athlone on Friday, 13th November, 2009. Captain Paul will be participating in the Inter-Provincial Bridge Championships scheduled for Athlone on Saturday//Sunday. Plan A is to reach Athlone circa 4pm on Friday evening and moor up outside the lock until Saturday morning. The return trip is scheduled to depart Athlone on Sunday @ 15.00 with the expectation of at least reaching Shannonbridge, and possibly making it to Banagher, by Sunday evening. We got lucky, big time, both on the outward and return trips!

  • Usually they fly off their perch atop the marker as a boat approaches...but this fellow stood his ground...

  • If one was to heed the various weather forecasts broadcasts through the media (TV, radio, etc.) as opposed to some of the better online weather sites, then this trip would never have been made!
  • We set out from Portumna at 11.20. A nice bright start to the day. Water very calm and little or no wind!
  • My goodness...another boat on the system!!!
  • Flooding and high water levels already evident by reference to reeds...no light parts visible! A sign of things to come!!!
  • Approaching Meelick Lock circa 12.05. Shortly after departing Portumna we made telephone contact with Stephen McGarry at Meelick Lock. Stephen already had the gates open so that we could enter the lock upon arrival.
  • We passed through Meelick Lock at approx. 12.20.......next stop Athlone!

  • The 'island' just south of Banagher.
  • Mary 2 at the helm while Captain Paul shoots some photos...
  • One of the few sections of 'land' that we encountered during the entire trip that was not covered in water...

  • An indication of the high level of water that we encountered throughout the entire stretch between Portumna and Athlone...
  • The tops of wire fences were clearly visible and helped navigation through flooded areas...
